Material Cost: Each of these beds cost us around $150 in materials to make in 2017. Please be aware that the costs of lumber and building material supplies vary from year to year.
Expected Lifetime: The galvanized steel panels, conduit, and corner covers will last decades. The cedar tops will last 10-15 years with good care, and the cedar supports will be a bit less once they are buried under the soil—closer to 10 years we’ve heard. This will depend heavily on your soil type (acidic vs. alkaline), what kind of chemicals you use in and around your beds, and your climate. If you choose treated lumber for the supports and tops, you’ll extend the beds’ lifetimes even longer. We’ve also heard of coating the supports in a natural below-grade waterproofing treatment (like DynoSeal) to extend the life of the supports.
